New year, New win!!

Matrixgrade - 3, Boots Athletic 2

Goal Scorers - Craig McMorron & Steve Carruthers

Man of the match - Steve Carruthers

4 players missing didn’t make too much difference to our challenge for the title. We couldn’t have had a better start when after just 5 minutes, a cross from defender Stevenson was pulled out of the air. A piece of outstanding skill, by the one and only McMorron gave his team the lead coolly for a great start to the game.

The bees should have built on this with Macca missing two guilt edged chances to increase our lead and the missed chances proved costly as boots kept at it and got the equalizer through Bradley after 15 minutes.

The Bees dug in on a very small and boggy pitch and all the work paid off when defender and man of the match Carruthers slammed in a loose ball from inside the 6 yard box giving us the lead after 30 minutes.

Boots gradually started to turn the screw and take the game to the Bees. Sinbad made a couple of great saves to keep us in front but just before half time Boots got their deserved equalizer. Ths was partly due to some poor defending in the 18 yard box, and the very impressive Captain Steve Hatherly found himself unmarked 12yards out, 2-2 after 40 minutes taking us to half time.

We looked a lot stronger in the second half, without really penetrating the boots defence. Players tired in the mud and conditions so changes were made. Notably McMorran switching from up front to the midfield gave the bees more penetration through the midfield. Subs Woody, Hassall and Wilson made a big difference down the flanks and up front. The hard work and changes gave matrix the lead and winner in the last quarter when Macca cottoned on to a loose ball on the edge of the 18 yard box. This gave him his second of the game and rounded off another impressive game. There are some weeks you have to grind out results this being one of them.

Well done to everybody at Matrix today. You deserved the points - see you all at training.
