Jonathan Tilbrook's
is an exciting and versatile conductor whose musical interests and
professional experience embrace operatic, choral and orchestral
conducting across a repertoire spanning five centuries. His career
has included performances at major venues throughout the UK as well
as in East and West Europe, Scandinavia, and the Far East. Recent highlights have included his highly successful Barbican Hall début with the English Chamber Orchestra (which was followed by a further invitation to conduct the orchestra at the Bromsgrove Festival); Handel's Xerxes (British Youth Opera) at the Queen Elizabeth Hall; critically acclaimed performances of Bach's St. Matthew Passion and St. John Passion in France with Florilegium; Walton's Façade at the Albert Hall, Nottingham with Lady Susanna Walton and musicians from Sinfonia Viva, and appearances with the contemporary music ensemble 'One Voice' in Edinburgh. In 1992, as a prizewinner of the conducting masterclasses and competition in Zlín, Czech Republic, he was appointed Assistant Conductor with the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic and received invitations to guest-conduct the Janácek Philharmonic and Koice State Philharmonic orchestras . He has since worked with a wide range of ensembles including the Martinu Philharmonic, Moravian Philharmonic, Olomouc and Kromerí chamber orchestras (Czech Republic); Koice State Philharmonic (Slovak Republic); Hong Kong Sinfonietta; East of England Orchestra (Sinfonia Viva); contemporary music groups 'One Voice' and Mephisto Ensemble and the early music ensemble Florilegium. Opera productions have included Don Pasquale; Die Fledermaus; La Bohčme; Carmen; Madama Butterfly; Cavelleria Rusticana; I Pagliacci; Le nozze di Figaro; Don Giovanni and L'Incoronazione di Poppea, many of these in performances at major UK festivals including Brighton; Cheltenham; King's Lynn and Holland Park. In 1996 he directed the world premičre of a new opera by Edward McGuire for the Northlands Festival in Scotland, Denmark and Sweden, and in March 2000 he conducted the first performance (since 1906) of the newly-reconstructed original version of Act II of Janácek's Jenufa - an event which attracted the interest of many of the foremost authorities on the composer. |
Jonathan Tilbrook is a committed exponent of new
music: recent performances have included the premičre of a
Spitalfields Festival commission by Matthew King and
works by composers such as James MacMillan (Confession of Isobel Gowdie),
Gabriel Ekoreka (Krater), David Matthews (Cantiga - at St John's,
Smith Square
with the Trinity
College of Music Chamber Orchestra), Berio and Birtwistle. Jonathan presently holds the positions of Sir Charles Mackerras Conducting Fellow at Nottingham University (where he has conducted a wide range of nineteenth and twentieth century repertoire including Britten's War Requiem, Janácek's Glagolitic Mass and Verdi's Requiem in major projects involving the Royal Philharmonic and East of England orchestras); Music Director of the Leicestershire Chorale and Postgraduate Course Leader at Trinity College of Music , London.
