New Lake for Alderson.

As mentioned in an earlier news feature, Gaps has now got full planning permission  for the construction of a canal type fishery, by joining the existing stock ponds behind Alderson Large Lake (excluding the bream stock pond) Work will initially start on the 17th December 2007 with clearance of the site, we ask members are to avoid the area until site clearance has been completed. This will take approximately 1 week. Work to excavate the fishery will commence in the spring of 2008. Financing the venture has not been easy, all of the money raised has been in the way of grants, these have been obtained by applying to local and national award bodies such as:-

AWARDS FOR ALL
SUFFOLK ENVIRONMENT TRUST
SUFFOLK COUNTY COUNCIL
SUFFOLK DISABLED ANGLERS FORUM

ENVIRONMENT AGENCY

When completed the fishery will be suited to all anglers with the emphasis on disabled and juniors members

Fish refuges for Alderson Large Lake

As part of the ongoing project to protect and develop the fish stocks at Alderson lake, four fish refuge's have been installed by the Society. These refuge's are designed to be floating islands tethered down to the bottom of the lake. The islands sit above a mesh cage which allows fish to go in and out of but stop predators such as cormorants from following them. This will hopefully give smaller fish and fry the chance to find a safe haven in the event of predators coming near. The roots of the plants on the top of the island, will, over a short period of time then hang down making a more natural habitat underwater. Above water the island is planted with a variety of plants which again as and when they become established will look pleasing to the eye and give anglers a target to aim at when fishing. Currently these are covered in netting to protect waterfowl from uprooting these and nesting on the top of the islands. When the plants then become established we can remove the netting if we desire to do so.. In the meantime anglers will have to cast with care!!

2007 Annual General Meeting

This years AGM was attended by a mere 39 members .It was agreed by unanimous voting that the membership fees would go up this year as follows: Adults up by £2

Intermediates up by £1, OAPs and Disabled up by £1, Juniors remained the same, and Night permits up by £1. This is inline with the continuing increase in water rents and the continuing stocking policy and maintenance to all waters.

Committee members standing down and not wishing to be re-elected where B Annal and M Moore, replacing them will be R Bloomfield and P Pollard. Gaps would like to take this opportunity in thanking retiring committee members for their unselfish services to the club and welcome new members onto the committee.

Planning application has been submitted to construct a new canal type fishery at Alderson Lake. 3 of the stock ponds and area's around them will be excavated to a shallow depth, and to provide fishing from 18-20 pegs.

Fish saved at Christchurch Park

Due to poor water quality, and at the request of park officials, GAPS members netted the round pond at Christchurch Park Ipswich where we managed to get nearly 2500 roach with some of them nearly up to 1lb

Fish Stocks

The ongoing programme of stocking continues with the latest arrivals being 185 small carp of approximately 1lb into the small lake at Alderson. These were introduced at the beginning of April 06 and have already shown to pleasure anglers. We also had approximately 2500 roach released into the large lake at Alderson in May. On top of this we have also stocked large amounts of Roach, Rudd and skimmer Bream into Alderson large lake over the past year.

The programme will continue again this year with more stock being purchased when funds are available. The amount of money we are able to spend depends on the membership and numbers that  re-new or join the society. Therefore the earlier you join this year gives the committee a better view of our finances and what we can afford to spend. To help with this please re-new your membership as early as possible.
