Baptism is the way someone becomes part of the church, a follower of Jesus
Christ. Baptism has a depth of meanings including:-
Some Christians say that only people who are old
enough to understand
should be baptised. The Church of England along with most other churches says
that in the same way that children are part of your family so they can be part
of the church, even though they can’t understand, on the understanding that they
will be brought up as Christians.
Baptism involves serious promises. By having your child baptised you are
promising that you will bring them up as Christians in the church. If you feel
that you cannot make these serious promises with integrity the Church of England
offers a service of service of
Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child where we ask Gods blessing on the child
and pray for them and their parents. Some parents who say that they want their
children to decide for themselves when they are older opt for this service.
Tots Praise
Every Wednesday during school term time at 10am
babies, toddlers and pre-school children come to the church for a short
“service” designed specifically for this age group. We sing songs, say prayers
and listen to a story, followed by drinks and biscuits and a time to play. This
is a very good way of introducing small children to church. Please feel
free to come along, or if you would like to know more phone Stef tel 244365, or
Heather tel. 271814.
The cost
The service of Baptism like God’s love is free. However
we receive no central funding. The only funding we get to maintain a Christian
Church in North Ormesby is from those who attend and funeral and marriage fees
so donations are much appreciated.
Baptism Certificate
An official certificate of Baptism is available which currently costs £12 (2008)
The rules of the Church of England
Canon B21 Of Holy Baptism
The normal time of Baptism is to be the main Sunday morning service.
Canon B22 Of the Baptism of Infants
The Vicar cannot refuse to baptise a child living in the parish (if the other
rules are followed). The Parish is North Ormesby down to the trunk road. Those
who live outside the parish can only be baptised here with the permission of
their own vicar. A vicar can insist on a reasonable period of instruction.
Canon B23 Of Godparents and Sponsors
There should be three Godparents two of which should be the same sex as the
child. If three can’t be found two, a man and a woman will do. A parent can also
act as a Godparent. Godparents must be baptised themselves, should care for the
child and be a good example to them.
