What is Speed Dating?

As most singles will agree, finding the right person to ask out, and then actually asking that person out, is the hardest part of dating. Speed Dating can greatly diminish these dating dilemmas.

Speed Dating is the new concept in singles nights sweeping the world. You will meet up to 25 dates in one fast, fun evening.

Speed Dating was born in the Nineties in Los Angeles, the brainchild of a Jewish Rabbi, facilitating the continuity of the Jewish community by helping Jews to meet other Jews. During the Noughties, the Speed Dating concept has widened its appeal, and is no longer restricted to religious communities.

Speed Dating has seen its largest and fastest growth in the fast and furious world of career-minded professional singles, where time and opportunity may be limited, and people are less likely (or not allowed) to develop personal relationships with work colleagues.

There are many different ways out there for singles to meet: dating/introduction agencies, online dating, personals columns, telephone chatlines, or meeting in bars/clubs. So what makes Speed Dating work?

  • You meet a lot of potential dates in a short space of time, as opposed to an agency where you might meet one or two a week.
  • You meet face-to-face - with the exception of meeting in a bar or club, other dating takes place without the impact of the first physical impression, so is only one or two dimensional. You learn so much more about someone by the three dimensional view achieved by meeting, e.g. chemistry can occur through so many other senses, like what someone smells like (especially those smells you are not aware of, called pheromones), or their body language.
  • When you do meet by other methods, providing of course your date turns up, what happens when you find that chemistry just isn't there? You may end up spending your evening with someone you really don't want to, or will end up getting a friend to ring to give you an excuse to leave. At a Speed Dating event, so many of these pressures are removed - you know you won't be 'stood up', 3 minutes is usually long enough for that 'chemistry' to work and tell you if you'd like to see this person again, and if you really think you won't get along with someone, you only have to make polite conversation for 3 minutes.
  • It is cost-effective - at around £1 per date, Speed Dating offers excellent value for money. You are not obliged to attend a certain or minimum number of events.

Dates Galore has now brought Speed Dating to the North East of England, beginning in Teesside and surrounding areas. The next event is to be held in Middlesbrough, but please join our mailing list to be informed of the many future events to be held in Durham, Yorkshire and Tyne and Wear. These events will be arranged all the sooner if interest is expressed in a particular location - send a Feedback Form to express interest.
