My first pair of nylon stockings were obtained from a friend of a merchant seaman after a trip to America.
They were beautiful 'fully fashioned' seamed with a picture heel and, cost £1. (about half a weeks wages) but lasted for ages. Any laddered stocking could be taken to the cleaners and, were repaired by a young lady who sat in the window. She repaired. them with a very fine type of Crochet hook and charged a few pence per inch, according to the length of the ladder.
We treated them like gold.
