Summary:

Elaboration:

Grab the reader's attention/interest.
In particular, place the most important information at the top of your page, ie. 'above the fold'.

Be dynamic; give your visitor a reason to come back.
Remember that in order to maintain their interest and encourage them to revisit, your site should be updated often. Changing visual cues will help to indicate this.

"What's new, pussycat?"
List the latest changes to a web site prominently on your initial page. This will enable visitors to quickly determine if there is anything new to be seen since their last visit to the site and will point them in the direction of the new material that has been added.

KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid!)
More is not necessarily better. Keep your content clear and concise. If visitors cannot find what they are looking for easily and clearly they will look elsewhere and never come back.

Be relevant.
Do not waste space/download time; ie. do not include pointless text or graphics on your page. Examine the content of your page and ask yourself: 'Is this what the reader came here for?'.

Proof-read!
Do not underestimate the importance of correct spelling and good grammar. Poor spelling or bad grammar appears unprofessional, indicates a lack of care, and could drive visitors away.
