Krnica, Croatia (by Maurizio Grbac)

Krnica, CroatiaKrinca, is situated on the east coast of Istria, 25KM from Pula. The sea where we dive stretches from Lina wreck in the north to Unije Island in the south. We dive on walls, shallows, caves all the way to diving in shipwrecks in the Kvarner Bay.

Shallow spot (Sika) Ubac
Depth:8-30 metres
Level: all categories

Shallow spot on Ubac is one of the most popular diving, before all, for its interesting morphology of the sea bottom and the animal world. The very shallow spot is turned east, so that the best diving time is in the morning hours. We start the diving on the northern side of the shallow spot. We dived to the depth of 5 metres, checked our equipment and went on. We are descending along the rim of the shallow spot eastwards. A wall opens up below us. The bottom is on 28 metres. We turn right and dive southwards. We enter the overhang at 14 metres continuing to the wall, and then to a little cave. After 30 minutes of diving, we turn and return under the ship where we dive out. The specialty of the shallow spot is the variety of sea life, sheepshead bream, two-banded breams, surmullets, corbinas, lobsters…and the always-clear sea.

Cliff Galijola
Depth: 12-45 metres
Level: all categories

Galijola, CroatiaThe mythic Galiola, the cliff in the middle of the sea, is perhaps the most beautiful diving rock in the Kvarner. The cliff itself stretches east-west and it is about one hundred and fifty metres long and only about fifty metres wide. In the middle of the cliff is a lighthouse warning the sailors of its existence. The most beautiful diving spot is its southern side. We anchor at about one hundred metres from the shore, at the depth of 12 metres. We are checking the direction of the sea current, which can be strong, and we start. We dive along the anchor rope until the border of the wall at 15 metres. Below us is a crag that looks as if it was cut with a knife. The depth is 50 metres, although it does not look that way at the first sight. Following the current, we are diving east-west. The biggest diving depth is about 40 metres. Lobsters, breams, giltheads, dentex, corbinas and a few lobsters are permanent members of Galiola. The wall swerves, it is full of holes. One moment we have the overhang, the other there are cuttings where fish and lobsters hide. The diving ends with diving out through the canyon leading up to the safety halt. The canyon is the most beautiful part of diving. After the diving, there is the obligatory visit and the photographing on Galiola

Wreck Lina
Depth: 25-50 metres
Level: advanced categories

Wreck LinaThere are lost of writings on the history of the ship and diving on the Lina. The always-perfect visibility certainly fascinates, regardless of the weather conditions or the time of the year. By the same token, you can often be disturbed by the intensity of the traffic under the sea. It is not rare that as many as 30-40 divers simultaneously dive. Yet, the Lina is beautiful. It is probably the most beautiful shipwreck for diving in the Kvarner. It sank next to the very coast. The ship prow is at 25 metres, and the bottom of the stern is at about 55. We start the diving itself on a more shallow prow, we descend towards the stern, we make two circles around the ship, say hi to conger eel and slowly return towards the surface. If we are headed northwards from the prow, after a minute of swimming, we reach the coast, the safety halt and here we are on the surface.
