Flower Gardens National Marine Sanctuary, Gulf of Mexico (By Mark Tucker)
I made my trip on the M/V Spree, out of Freeport, TX, and couldn't have been happier. Good food, friendly companions, cold beer. The captains were entertaining, the crew and dive crew excelent. Visibility was 75+ feet, always. Water temp was 83 degrees, very comfortable in a 3 mil. All of the dive sites are number bouys and each has a descent line. I would reccomend this trip to anyone within 10 hours driving or a couple of hours flying from Houston, but is very reachable to most of the USA. Enjoy!

Gardens National Marine Sanctuary, in the Gulf of Mexico is a wonderful
dive site. They are an amazing coral reef. A wonderful assortment of creatures,
on my personal two day/seven dive trip there I saw tons of fish, french
angels, blue tangs, black durgons, parrot fish, etc, as well
as morays, stingray, lobster, many barracuda, several large schools
of game fish, and a hammerhead. Other members spotted a loggerhead
turtle, and a pair of mantas. They also have whalesharks
depending on the season. It is a trip that can be made over a weekend,
so almost anyone within 12 hours of Houston can pull it off without missing

day of work or so. Seven dives, including one night dive, mostly at around
85 feet, but there are deeper spots. The weather can be a problem, but
while I was there it was wonderful. Take your dram if you have any tendencies
to get seasick, (we had a couple of people laid up most of the weekend,
but that isn't that rare).
