Many thanks for
MVM 48, as usual, I read it from cover to cover in a couple of hours or so – the
best read of the year! It was interesting to read of Chris’s meeting with Bob
Isoz in Las Vegas, as I have a photo of Bob with Betty Grable – and I hardly
recognised him, until I realised it was taken over thirty years ago – how time
flies. He was such a good friend to Betty. The printing in MVM 48 is spot on,
with terrific photos of Gregory Peck and Gene Kelly – and I especially loved Ian
Lukes’ fine piece on Gale Sondergaard – and the lovely photo of Ginny Simms on
page 47. Lastly, it was especially nice to read all about Chris’s holiday in
California – it brought back many happy memories from thirty years ago with the
Judy Garland Club, which included the one and only Ken Sephton! Stan
Smith, London
Thankyou for
the latest MVM – each issue brings back so many memories of cinema-going –
rushing out of school to meet my mother, then going to one of the three circuits
of cinemas at the time – Odeon, Gaumont and ABC. Sometimes there was a good film
on at all three – which would mean three visits to the pictures in one week!
This was also during the war and it was not unusual to suddenly have shown on
the screen ‘An air raid warning has just been sounded – you may leave if you
wish, but the programme will continue’. Of course we always stayed on – and on
one occasion I was deeply engrossed in the film ‘The Bridge Of San Luis Rey’
when a bomb dropped fairly near, just as Lynn Bari was about to cross the rope
bridge which was destined to break. The blast of the bomb shook the cinema as
the break occurred – which added tremendously to the effect!! Many people say
they cannot see a film more than once, but I get endless pleasure running
through my favourites over and over again without getting bored at all! Keep up
the good work with MVM! Brian Collier, Rustington
Thankyou for
another great issue of MVM – and I’m glad Chris had such a good time in
California. Incidentally, the part of ‘Pinkie Brown’ in 1947’s ‘Brighton Rock’
was apparently offered to film historian Peter Noble (1917-1997) – but he knew
Richard Attenborough would be much better in this role – so he recommended him!
In what capacity, I wonder, did MVM member Brian Glanvill work on the stage show
‘Gypsy’? Nice to see the article on Griffith Jones by Ken Sephton – I personally
recall his performance in ‘Miranda’(1947). His actress daughter Gemma Jones is
still working in films and television, I’m pleased to say. I did enjoy too,
Astor Sklair’s fine interview with Martin Benson – all so very interesting. Sunil
Hiranandani, London
I was very
pleased with MVM 48 – the cover, the printing and the reproduction of the
pictures are all outstanding. For reader Gwyneth Peters of Pembrokeshire
regarding children of movie stars, I know of one book entitled ‘What Happened To
Their Kids?’ by Malcolm Forbes (Simon & Schuster, 1990). Though the contents are
not exclusively movie stars, there are interesting chapters on the children of
The Barrymores, Pat Boone, Charles Boyer, Marlon Brando, Joan Crawford, Doris
Day, Errol Flynn, W.C Fields, Clark Gable, Jayne Mansfield, Tyrone Power,
Spencer Tracy, Gregory Peck, etc. There is also an extremely interesting book by
Ned Wynn, older son of talented Keenan Wynn and Evie Wynn Johnson, detailing his
life growing up in Beverly Hills & having both Wynn and Van Johnson as fathers!
I liked Gwen Rudman’s nice tribute to Frederick Harding – a truly fine and
gentle man, whom I actually met, along with Gwen – and Albert Leonard, in London
a few years back. Keep up the wonderful work Chris – and all contributors! Until
next time…Charles Crowell, Pennsylvania, USA.
