Flounced skirt directions

A design with a fitted yoke at the waist, and gathered tiers below.

The 'fitted yolk' is as for a panelled skirt, from waist to hip. Flounces are made either straight or curved: a straight rectangle of fabric will gather onto the previous edge with an obvious ruching of the fabric - a curved flounce - much harder to cut - will sew to the previous edge more evenly.
The instructions and calculations are for rectangles.

Work is on the same basis as curtaining - cut rectangular flounces
between 1.5 and 2 times longer than the edge to which they will be attached.
If you do not need a fitted yolk, the first panel should be cut as a rectangle of
length:
hip measurement + ease (3" or 7.5cm) + seam allowance (5/8" or 1.5cm)
depth:
Hip depth (distance from waist to hips) + seam allowance (5/8" or 1.5cm)
+ casing for elastic (twice the depth of the elastic plus seam allowance)

I'm assuming, if you're intending to sew yourself, that you're
happy attaching the flounces. My old Singer used to have a wonderful
'ruching attachment' which unfortunately doesn't fit a modern model.
