About Us
Heavy Woollen Donkeys is a social rugby league club that practices and plays touch rugby league throughout the year at Shaw Cross ARLFC. We also arrange games of 13-a-side full contact rugby league with similar teams on an irregular basis. The team includes players with a wide range of fitness, skill and experience. As a social team, the emphasis is firmly on enjoying the game of rugby league.
We meet weekly at Shaw Cross (AKA The Donkey Sanctuary) on Thursday evenings at 6pm and have an arrangement where we individually join the club lottery (£1 a week) in order to use their facilities. We have use of a floodlit pitch, changing room, showers and of course the bar for afterwards! Currently we do not charge subs but this may have to change in the future.
New players are always welcome to join us. To find out more you can email us , post a message on the messageboard or just come down to Shaw Cross on any Thursday at 6pm.
How to find us
Shaw Cross ARLFC is located on the A653 Leeds Road, Dewsbury. From the Dewsbury Ring Road, follow the road signs for Leeds (A653) going up the hill towards Shaw Cross. Carry on until you get to the traffic lights at the crossroads with Grange Road and Owl Lane. Go straight on through the next set of lights 200 yards further on, then just after these lights turn left into the car park entrance between Shaw X Snax and the China Garden takeaway.
From the M62, leave at junction 28 and take the A653 dual carriageway towards Dewsbury. Follow this road for about 2.5 miles until the road narrows into a single lane. Go through a pedestrian crossing but before the next set of lights turn right into the car park entrance between Shaw X Snax and the China Garden takeaway.
From the M1, leave at junction 40 and take the A638 towards Dewsbury. At the roundabout about a mile further on, take the third exit into Owl Lane. Go down past Ram Stadium on the left to a mini-roundabout and take the third exit heading towards Leeds on the A653. At the traffic lights turn right, then immediately left into the car park entrance between Shaw X Snax and the China Garden takeaway.
