Notes

  • Said to have been put into service at age 12 or 13.
According to Eric Downs, Rose used to visit someone called Percy Saddleton when she was in the area.
Apparently, Rose was a housekeeper for someone called 'Sussman' or similar who lived opposite a farm which was owned by Perce Saddleton in Waterham, between Faversham and Whitstable.

Apparently Rose was brought up on a farm but not by her own parents. It is said that she thought she was adopted but later found that she hadn't been.  It is said that she was not left anything or even mentioned in the will of the people she thought were her adoptive parents, she even called them mum and dad, and was very bitter about the rejection, this is all hearsay. That family may have been the "Tippets" who, some time after Rose was married,  sold the farm and moved to Rainham in Kent.  I am told that Grandad Tippett (Rose's foster father) had two sisters, one married a Gransden and may be in the Sittingbourne area, the other was a spinster, but did not have any children other than Rose.  I have not been able to trace any of them but would like to getin touch as they may be able to help with more information or even a photograph.

Rose is said to have lived at Hernhill around 1908, possibly with Mabel and Albert.  Rose then moved with Mabel to someone who brought themup. This may have been in Waterham around 1908. The Old Farm, Waterham Farm.

Rose's marriage certificate gives her address as 'Hernhill' in 1929.The witnesses were Tippetts (see marriage notes).

Talking to Jeane Beale (Bryant) she remembers Eric Downs saying that his father had spoken about Silas and Lizzie as he lived next door to them at Rhode Common.  Presumably Silas's wife was known as Lizzie which fits in with her middle name Elizabeth which appears on the birth certificate of Albert Woods.
Jean says that it was only Rose and Mabel that lived at Waterham Farm, Nellie might have been there at the begining but Rose only spoke about the two of them (Rose & Mabel).  "Rose did say that the boys came there to live at the begining but were sent away because they broke the tools, but I (Jean) do not believe this to be true because of the dates shown in the family tree for their respective ages.  George for example was 19 years old when Rose was born and married at 21 when Rosewas just 2 years old".
Jean went on to say  "Rose told me that she was just 3 years old whenher mother died, around 1908.  Mother only spoke of George, Mabel, Daisy, Albert and Samuel.  I did not even know that she had a brother Bill (William) in Australia until she went out there on holiday".

Rose had said that her father died before her mother and that they were living at Hernhill when the mother died.
