Note:  Unlikely though it may seem, another John Woollett married a different Eliza Town in Strood, Kent, in 1855.  This caused some confusion until the "real" John and Eliza were located.  It is not known if they are related in any way.
General Index shows marriage reference 2a 999 Hollingbourn, June quarter 1883.
The marriage certificate shows:-
John a 25 year old bachelor resident in Langley at the time of the marriage to Eliza Town a 21 year old spinster also resident in Langley. They were married after banns.  The two witnesses are shown as HarreyWoollett and Hannah Morgan.

Occupation Gasworks Labourer at Beckton Gas Works E. London

Notes

  • Described as "a tall, well dressed Wesleyan preacher, a very strict man" by Betty Sullivan.
The birth certificate of daughter Winifred Rebecca gives occupation as Labourer Brickfield.
The birth certificate of son George Stephen, gives occupation as Gas Stoker.  This is almost certain to be at Beckton Gas Works in East London as this is only a short distance from where they were living.
The 1881 census for 19 James Street, Aylesford, Kent. shows John as head of household living with Winifred and Thomas in Aylesford.  He is shown as a general labourer age 23 born in Cuxton and unmarried.
The 1861 census for Frindsbury, "The Crutches", shows 3 year old Johnborn in Cuxton (abt 1858).
The 1871 census for Frindsbury, "Home Street", shows 12 year old Johnborn in Cuxton (abt 1859).

Various birth and death certificates show a series of moves, all in the same small area of East Ham.
January 1886, 7 Stanley St., North Beckton. (birth of George Stephen).
January 1888, 1 Ferndale St., East Ham. (birth of Ellen Rose).
December 1889, 13 Telham Rd., East Ham. (birth of Ethel Catherine).
December 1891, 26 Telham Rd., East Ham. (birth of John Henry).
March 1894, 4 Telham Rd., East Ham. (birth of Stephen).
May 1897, 7 Abbotts Cottages, Wall End, East Ham. (birth of Thomas)
October 1899, 4 Brighton Rd., East Ham. (death of Eliza).

Ferndale Street, Telham Road and Brighton Road all still exist in East Ham.  Unfortunately the whole area has been re-developed and none of the original houses built in the 19th century survive.  They have been replaced with modern housing and flats.  The only original building still standing is the Ferndale Public House on the corner of Ferndale Street which gives some impression of how things used to be.
Stanley Street has gone altogether and I still have to check out WallEnd.  There is a Wall End Road and it will be interesting to see if Abbotts Cottages are still there or whether they too have been demolished.

The 1891 census  (film 17, RG12/1341 at Essex Record Office in Chelmsford) shows John Woollett, head, gas stoker, born in Cuxton, Kent and living at 13 Telham Road, East Ham.  With him is his wife Eliza age 29, born in Langley, Kent,  and daughters Winifred R., scholar, born Eccles, Ellen Rose, born Beckton, Essex, and Ethel K., also born in Beckton.
None of the ages could be interpreted but it rather confirms that at that time there were only the three daughters as George Stephen had died around 1887.  Any remaining children will have been born after the census in 1891 and before or at the death of Eliza in 1899.

Kelley's Directory for Essex for the year 1899 (and other years) shows for East Ham "There is a Wesleyan Chapel in the Barking Road with sittings for about 430 persons and a Primitive Methodist Chapel in the High Street built in 1885 with 300 sittings".

There is also a book called "Bygone East Ham" by Brian Evans, published by Phillimore in 1993 - ISBN 0850338778 - which contains some nice photographs of the area at the turn of the century as well as some general information.

I have looked through the Electoral Role (Essex Record Office) for the Parish of East Ham, Central East Ward, which covers the Telham Roadand Brighton Road areas for years 1905 and 1910 but were unable to see a mention of any Woollett.  It may be worth looking at something a little earlier.  I do not at this stage know what happened to John Woollett after the death of Eliza.

The IGI shows the baptism of a John Woollett in Cuxton January 3rd 1858.  He is the son of Thomas and Eliza this is confusing as I thought the parents were John and Eliza.

1901 census shows John living at 21 Welstead Road, East Ham, London.A widower with his children Winifred, John, Stephen and Thomas.
