Time and Seasons

All intelligent races of Varna measure the passage of time in their way. Events are recorded through song, story, art and some civilised societies have even kept written histories.

Night and Day: The days on Varna last 24 hours and are determined by the rising and the setting of the sun. Seasonal and geographical influences effect the length of night and day in any given time and location.

Days of the Week: There are ten days in a week and the week is known usually as a tenday or a ride. The individual days go unnamed and are referred to simply as first-day, second-day, and so on.

Hours of the Day: The hours are referred to simply by number and the hours are numbered 1 to 12 twice, of morning and after noon indicate the particular part of the day. Also the time of day may be referred to as tolls of a particular bell.  Folk might say it is “betwixt the third hour after noon or “past three tolls of old Arlen’s Spire” or “three tolls”.  General times of day are referred to as dawn, of morning, noon or high-sun, after noon, dusk, dark, midnight.

The Sylvani Calendar of Varna: Different calendars exist in different lands and times of Varna, but that which is most commonly used is that of the elves.  The year is split into twelve months, each of 30 days giving a year of 360 days in length.

Marking the Years: The different cultures of Varna number the passing of the years in different ways.  The most commonly used system among humans was founded by the human sage Dalabantha. The term used to number each year is Dalabantha’s Count (DC). The current year is DC1481.

The Prophecies: On the eve of the coming year the high clerics of Allustinia commune with their goddess for insight into the coming year. From the insights given by their goddess the coming year is given a name, the current year is named the The Year of Legacies Born.
