The Critical Hit Rollover Jackpot

A roll of 20 is a critical threat, you roll again to confirm your critical and if you hit the target’s AC you have scored a critical hit!  But, if you roll a second 20 for your confirmation roll then you may roll a third time. If this hits the targets AC then you get to add another multiplier to your critical hit damage. if you roll another 20 the same rule applies… it’s a rollover!

e.g.

“Stand back Palarnus, I’ll handle this!” Tandrik attacks the tarrasque with his staff. He rolls a 20! Hoody hoo! He rolls to confirm… another 20! Whoop de doo! (He is now on x2 dam – a normal crit) Hush falls over the table as he rolls again… a further 20! The gods of the dice are smiling tonight! (He is now on x3 dam) Corey peers over his screen suspiciously.  Tandrik rolls again, a 19, oh, even with his bonuses its not enough to hit the tarrasque’s AC of 35.  But he is still on x3 damage! Yes! He rolls his damage dice and gets a 4, 2 and a 3; with -1 Str bonus this reduces each damage roll by 1… so Tandrik does 6 points of damage.  Tandrik’s six fails to penetrate the tarrasque’s carapace and the next round it swallows Tandrik whole.

The Fortitude Save to Stabilise

The 10% stabilisation roll is replaced with a Fort Save of DC14 + number of HP below zero    (In formulaic terms DC14 - HP)

So characters taken to -1 would save at DC15, -2 at DC16 and so on, making it easier initially to stabilise but then progressively more difficult to stabilise with a maximum save of DC23.  Of course this benefits character classes with a high
Fort Save (but I think that is fair enough) and also characters of higher level. However higher level PC's are more likely to take a hit that will reduce them to way past zero or even kill them outright.

Standing UP From Prone

“MMmmm. I’m prone. If I stand up I’ll provoke. I know! I’ll spend the rest of the combat attacking from prone!”

If you are prone you may, as a full round action, roll 5 feet into an adjacent square (including diagonally) that isn’t threatened and stand up without provoking an AoO.  If you cannot roll into a non-threatened square you may take a full round action to stand up where you are, you will still provoke an AoO, but get a +4 to your AC.  Alternatively the option still exists to stand up from prone as a standard action and provoke an AoO.

Moving Diagonally

This incurs no movement penalty, diagonal squares count as 5 feet. Life is too short. Really.

Prestige Classes

Don’t get me started on this! My opinion is here.

Critical Fumbles

If you roll a 1, it is a potential fumble, you roll again to confirm and if you fail to hit the target’s AC then it is a fumble. You then roll a d20 on my Critical Fumble Table.

Firing into Melee

If you roll a 1 while firing into melee, you do not roll to confirm the fumble, it is automatic. Instead you immediately make an attack roll against a random ally in the melee.
