In August 2007 we spent a relaxing week in Rhodes. This was Conrad's 4th visit to Greece but Donna's first.
Faliraki, where we stayed was not so nice as it was built for tourists anbd little more than a mass of hotels, bars and restaurants, although it has a very good, if a little crowded beach.
However, Rhodes old town and its harbour are well worth a visit. This was once the site of the Collossus of Rhodes (one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World). Despite being about 2400 years old, most of the "Old Town" is actually medieval, dating from 600-700 years ago. Knights fortified the town and supported various crusades into the holy land. The castle-like grand masters palace is still in excellent condition and the small streets and alleyways withing the walls feels like it may have hundreds of years ago. Although busy in parts it is easy to lose the crowds as you wander around.
Lindos is a beautifully located small town about half way down Rhodes's east coast. It is well worth a visit for the whitewashed village, the beautiful bays and the ancient acropolis surrounded by fortifications from the middle ages. We went on day trip by boat to the island of Symi, just off the Turkish coast - the border of Europe and Asia.
A beautiful harbour based village was nice to look around and the sea was crystal clear.
Conrad did a scuba dive at Kallithea. Although not as impressive as the coral-filled tropical seas of Bali and Philippines there were plenty of fish, nice rock formations and a chance to swim in underwater caves. On the last day we hired a car. We visited the ancient site of Kamiros and continued down the picturesque west coast to Monolithos with its impressive fortified tower of rock.
A more secluded beach, a monastery, a small town woth another medieval castle led to us finishing our day and holiday with a meal by the sea in Haraki.
Then the long overnight journey home.
