Why Bangladesh?
As a strange twist of fate a in 2001 I got a job in Bangladesh. I was there to set up a molecular biology lab and train Bangladeshi Scientists to do molecular biology, run the lab and to do research into epidemiology and diversity of rice pathogens. That's enough science.
So, after 7 weeks in the Philippines (extended due to those planes that crashed in the USA) I arrived in Bangladesh. Well that's why I was there.
As for Donna, the story has to begin with Beijing and our meeting. That story can be read on the CHINA page. So she joined me in Bangladesh and things moved on. I worked and partied. Donna got bored and partied and for a while got a job teaching little kids. We left Bangladesh on the 8th July 2004 just before the floods got bad.

I did also do some work

With all the travels and parties you may think I didn't get much work done. On the contrary, this was what took up most of my time.
You can read an overview of the SHIP sub-project of PETRRA,see my final report summarizing our achievements in the molecular lab, and our three publications on Bacterial Identification, Method Development for Blast Fingerprinting and Diversty of Rice Blast Disease.
You can also see the methods book that I left behind.
However, I have not included copies of the course manuals or the interactive web of information that I produced as the files are a bit big and I want space on our site for other things.

A New Begining

After a withdrawn election and 2 years spent by a military-backed caretaker government arresting corrupt politicians, elections are coming to allow a new start for Bangladesh.
Lets hope that things might begin to get better.
