Uptime Overlord Frequently Asked Questions

What is Uptime Overlord ?
It's a free web server monitor for Mac OS X.

How do I use it ?
You tell Uptime Overlord which server - or servers - you want to monitor. You then leave Uptime Overlord to keep an eye on them. Later, once you have some data, you can view detailed reports of the uptime for the server.

What kind of reports does Uptime Overlord provide ?
  • Current state and time in that state
  • Summary, with pie charts for today, yesterday, this week and this month
  • Details for any time period, showing full data as a table, time series chart and pie chart.

What kind of servers does it monitor ?
You can monitor private web servers on an intranet, or any web server on the internet.

How does Uptime Overlord work ?
Uptime Overlord periodically tries to connect to the server(s) you are interested in. If there is a problem connecting, Uptime Overlord finds out if the server is really down or if there is some other explanation.

What faults does Uptime Overlord recognize ?
    Currently Uptime Overlord recognizes:
  • No Internet connection
  • Domain name errors
  • Router errors along the way to the server

Why is my dial-up connection no good ?
Uptime Overlord needs to access the web a lot! So you really need broadband or some other kind of "always-on" connection.

How much disk space does Uptime Overlord need ?
Uptime Overlord stores all the data for each server you monitor. You need roughly 10MB of disk space per year for each server you monitor.
