Welcome to Barking Railway Station's independent website. Stations are mainly about trains, but they are also transport hubs and
become part of town centres as travellers access shops and amenities near the station for convenience. When Barking station
first opened in 1854 it was described as being "just outside the town". I have organised the pages assuming that trains are a
priority, followed by buses and taxis and have given a little information only about other amenities in the vicinity.
A railway station is a vital part of sustainable transport, but the internet lacks a single official site giving extensive
information
about Barking Station and accessing the railway. I hope you find this independent site useful.
I don't distinguish between Underground and National Rail except for clarity. The distinction isn't a helpful one. In recent years
it's become blurred by the fact that TfL (who run the Underground amongst other things) have a rail division, and in particular
TfL will take over the running of Silverlink Metro in November 2007 bringining it up to Underground srtandards in many ways,
and charging Underground fares. But it won't strictly be part of the Underground: but who cares? Only quality and value for
money matter.
