The Meljon Singers
ABOUT US

THE MELJON SINGERS is one of London's most accomplished and enterprising chamber choirs and celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2010. Based in the London Borough of Redbridge, the group performs regularly in local and central London venues, and appears by invitation in other parts of the UK. In 2009 the group visited Italy for the fourth time, with appearances at the Rassegna Corale International Festival at Levanto and the Cinque Terre.

With their founder Musical Director Janette Ruocco, THE MELJON SINGERS bring to their performances a spirit of adventure and a passion for music-making. Their concerts include music as diverse Palestrina's 16th century polyphony, Romantic classics like Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem, modern minimalist masters such as John Tavener and Arvo Pärt and the wealth of new choral writing from all over the world. The group's repertoire is constantly expanding, offering audiences fresh and original programmes devised to shed new light on familiar works and to explore little-known or unjustly neglected music.

Since 2005, admittance (by ticket) to THE MELJON SINGERS' concerts has been free to under-18s, demonstrating the group's commitment to encouraging young audiences to experience, live, the expressive possibilities of choral music.

THE MELJON SINGERS' varied concert highlights have included Dido and Aeneas, Purcell's exquisite chamber opera (2007); Rachmaninov's Vespers (2008); Le-Chayyim!, a celebration of music by Jewish composers (2008); and Night and Day, a programme of light music and classics from the Swing Era (2009). The group performed Howells' Requiem and Rheinberger's Mass in E flat to great acclaim at St James's Piccadilly in November 2009, opened their 20th Anniversary Season (2010) with A Suitable Job for a Woman, a third in their concert series showcasing the music of women composers.

The diverse musical tastes and talents of the group are reflected in its recordings. Smoke Gets In Your Eyes includes American classics of popular song from the twenties and thirties. Inner Harmonies is a showcase of twentieth century sacred choral music including John Tavener's The Lamb and Janette Ruocco's own setting of Psalm 23, written for THE MELJON SINGERS. A Voice from Heaven, recorded live at St James's Piccadilly, includes performances of the Howells Requiem and the Rheinberger Mass in E flat.
