Bikeability Courses for Schools
We offer four courses for schools but if they do not fit your requirements then talk to us we may be able to tailor a course to suit you.
Fun Skills course
This course is open to any child from year 2, 3 or 4. It is a two hour fun session aimed at getting children familiar with their bikes prior to starting Bikeability training..
Course cost:
£5 per child.
Bikeability Level 1 course
This course is open to any child from year 3 and above. We do not recommend it to be delivered to children in year 5 upwards unless special circumstances exist. It is a 3-4 hour course depending upon numbers.
Course cost:
£15 per child.
Bikeability Level 1 and 2 combined course
This course is open to any child from year 5 and above. This is a 6-12 hour course depending upon numbers (see timetable below for an idea of how this course 'works').
Course cost:£40 per child.
Bikeability Level 3 course
Any child who has completed the level 2 course successfully and is in summer year 6 or higher can then take the level 3 course.
The course takes 3 hours. There are no more than two children per instructor.

Course Contents
Fun Skills:
- Ride without wobbling
- Stop safely
- Manoeuvre safely to avoid objects
- Ride one handed or have the knowledge of how to improve after the course
- Look all around without wobbling
- Carry out a simple bike check
Bikeability Level 1:
- Get on and off the bike without help
- Start off and pedal without help
- Stop without help
- Ride without help for roughly one minute or more
- Make the bike go where they want
- Use their gears
- Stop quickly with control
- Manoeuvre safely to avoid objects
- Look all around, including behind, without wobbling
- Signal left and right without wobbling
- Carry out a simple bike check
Bikeability Level 2:
- Carry out all level 1 manoeuvres
- Start an on road journey
- Finish an on road journey
- Be aware of everything around them as they ride, including behind
- Understand how and when to signal their intentions to other road users
- Understand where to ride on the roads they are using
- Pass parked or slower moving vehicles
- Pass side roads
- Turn left into a minor road
- Turn left into a major road
- Turn right into a major road
- Turn right into a minor road
- Be able to take the correct carriageway lane when they need to
- Decide where cycle lanes can help their journey and demonstrate correct use. (If this can be incorporated into training)
- Explain why they have made decisions during riding and demonstrate understanding of safe riding strategy
- Demonstrate a basic understang of the Highway Code, in particular how to interpret road signs
- Demonstrate an understanding of safety equipment and clothing
The following outcomes are not part of the core standard and are therefore non-compulsory. However, they may be delivered at level 2.
- Make a U-turn
- Go straight on from minor road to minor road at crossroads
- Turn left at a mini-roundabout
- Go straight ahead at a mini-roundabout
- Turn right at a mini-roundabout
Bikeability Level 3
- Carry out all level 1 manoeuvres
- Carry out all level 2 manoeuvres
- How to use roundabouts
- How to use junctions controlled by traffic lights (where these are sited locally)
- How to use multi lane roads and turn off into them (where these are sited locally)
- An understanding of filtering and an ability to decide when to filter and when to wait
- How to use both on and off road cycle facilities (where these are sited locally)
- Hazard perception and strategy to deal with hazards
- An understanding of route planning

This gives you some idea of how the course is timetabled. We are willing to take groups up to 8 but they will of
course get more attention and thus better training in smaller groups, the ideal number being 6.
