Sites and Monument Records

So what does SMR and NMR mean? Well its quite simple. The SMR also known as Site and Monuments Records and the NMR is known as National Sites and Monuments Records. And all can be viewed by the pubic. However some Archaeology Units do have a set charge and you must ask for the site of interest that you are either studying.

The NMR, has all known archaeology but on a much large national scale and you can visit them or order a site reports. This part of the website is not set up for metal detectors people and they should go elsewhere. Although the SMR is a public record, the inclusion of a site does not imply public access to that location. Many monuments are on privately owned land.
