Religious Beliefs

I do not follow any particular religion having decided not to follow any after a year’s consideration whilst walking home from scouts between the ages of 14 to15. I decided that I did not know enough to determine which, if any, religion I should follow. Since then I have become convinced that this was the right decision for me. I hold that that which science can not answer are unknown to mankind. Hence, the cause of the creation of the universe is unknown. It may or may not have been created by some sort entity or entities, which I shall call gods. Hence, the number of gods that exists is some unknown number between 0 and ∞. I think that the rational approach to beliefs it to form them based of testable evidence and that they should ideally be falsifiable by some means.

I do have some beliefs regarding religion. I think it is extremely unlikely that the mythology of any religion I have ever heard of is even close to being true. I feel that a four year olds generally have a better chance of understanding calculus that the creators of all of these religions actually understanding the true origin of the universe. I generally find that most religions are too human and geocentric as if we have a special place in the universe. We don’t. We are, I believe, just another animal struggling to survive in a harsh and unforgiving universe. If the sun went nova, it is highly unlikely that anything would notice our demise, or care. I think that that which created the universe would be very unlikely to interfere with the universe. It would certainly not communicate with some medium sized animal living on a small rocky planet orbiting a normal yellow star in the outer spirals of a run of the mill spiral galaxy. Giving this, I think praying to gods is about as futile as praying to the sun or to a volcano.

I think we live in a temporal universe where everything inside it is temporary. This includes ones soul, for want of a better word. I think the soul is a manifestation of the physical world, namely the chemical and electrochemical reactions in the brain. Hence, when this is destroyed, the soul is also destroyed. For example, I do not believe that my late mother exists in any coherent form. I certainly do not think she has gone to some sort of heaven. That, I think would be just wishful thinking.
