Kairouan, an Islamic holy city, is well known for it's ancient mosque, carpets and shoes.
Less well known as a stand-in for Cairo in "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

RED.
Indy and Marion commence their walk through Cairo, emerging through a large gateway into Ave. 7 Novembre.
BLUE.
Off Ave. 7 Novembre walk through the tunnel (Impasse #5) located behind the traders stalls and look
back. This is where the lone agent stood silhouetted in the doorway before sending his assasins in.
Also Marion was bundled onto the back of a cart by Indy in this yard.
ORANGE.
This stretch of Ave. 7 Novembre was used in several shots. The German agent looking down from his first
floor apartment overlooked this area. The apartment is above several tourist shops but they don't own the
first floor - enquire at the public phone (taxiphone) shop round the side (carry on past the taxiphone
for some more Raiders' alleyways).
LIGHT BLUE.
Down here you will find some alleyways featured during the basket chase, and is also the alleyway Indy
emerges from into the main market only to discover a sea of baskets! Over by the Kasbah walk down
Rue Kramta to see where Marion clobbers her pursuer and jumps into a basket, walk a little further to
see where the agents are alerted by the monkey.
PURPLE.
Many alleyways around Av. 7 Novembre were used for the fleeing kidnappers.
You could easily spend a whole day wandering around Kairouan spotting the individual alleyways from
the movie.
In any case it doesn't matter if you don't find one as the city is a wonderful place to explore,
with all of the sounds of shoe-makers and carpenters, the smell of spicy food, the colours and
architecture to take in.
DARK GREEN.
This alley, where Indy rushes past a group of locals sat by the roadside, is located next to the
famous camel-powered well 'Bir Barouta' and is now a music / photo store. Also just here is another
side-street (with the Hotel Barouta) where Indy is sprayed with machine gun fire and in return shoots
and kills the truck driver.
YELLOW.
Where Indy meets the sword-twirling assasin, also the square where Indy stashes the truck in Omar's
Garage after stealing it from the German army.
LIGHT GREEN.
The café bar where Indy drowns his sorrows. The main street runs down the left hand side as you face
the café. The area outside has since had the pavement cut back and become part of the road. The café
itself has been divided up and the front is currently a carpet shop.
DARK ORANGE.
This triangular piece of open (for now) land was used to stage the truck falling on it's side and
exploding.
