Acro Wot
Wingspan: 58 inches
Engine: Os FS 70 Surpass Type: Intermediate aerobatic Description Now what can I say about the Chris Foss designed Acro Wot that has not been said many times before. I have long ago lost count of the number of modellers I have seen with this plane, the number of copies I have seen flying, and the number I have seen for sale at swap-meets and in classified pages. It is, without doubt, one of the best flying r/c models ever designed, and despite its not inconsiderable age, it is still up there with the best of them. I wonder how many kits have been sold, and how many flying miles Acro Wots have racked up.
This particular copy was sold to me by my good friend Mel, who built two wings because he wanted to experiment with a system to stop the model gliding on beyond the landing strip. He came up with the idea of installing a braking system, that is akin to dive brakes. In practice this means that you can do your landing approach at 45 degrees, and then land in a very small space. You have to land immediately, because the air speed decays very quickly if the dive-brakes are out, the model is in level flight, and the engine is only ticking over. It makes for very exciting landing approaches, that need concentration to get right. The brakes make the model dive, so I will mix in a little up elevator to counteract this.
Engine The OS 70 Surpass could well have been designed to fit into the Acro Wot, and although it will take up to a 90, the 70 is quite adequate for me. OS engines are amongst the best for quality and reliability, so when you hand over your dosh in the model shop you know what you are getting both reliability and power.
