(Reverse Chronological Order)
We are at the end of Series 3 of "Real Rescues" for BBC Daytime; where we provided the facilities for Mixing and Dubbing, Full Mix, DME Mix, D&E Mix and separate Comm Mixes to cater for future recuts. We cater for large and small Production Companies, working on Internationally Transmitted TV Productions; Local and Network TV Broadcast, and a diverse range of projects such as; Commercial and Corporate Videos; to Radio Programmes & Audio specific Production.
I joined Southampton Solent University as a way to slowing down ???, and pass on some of the tricks of the trade to up and coming new students interested in the Media Production Areas. I mainly instruct in TV Studio operation, with SD and HD Cameras in our three TV Studios, and also assist in the other areas relating to the Sound, Radio and Rehersal Studios. We filmed, edited and Dubbed a 30 second commercial for TV using mainly our on-site facilities, to advertise the opportunities to 6th Form Students looking to move into University Education.
I left Meridian TV at Christmas 2004 continuing an investment in Broadcast Post Production Sound Equipment. I had already purchased a comprehensive Pyramix Hard Disc Editing system to carry out a contract to provide the Audio requirements for Series 8 of "Monkey Business", which was transmitted by Meridian Television Ltd in July 2005, and Internationally through "Animal Planet and Discovery Channel". Further Equipment was purchased to build and setup a fully specified Dubbing Facility in premises in Southampton City Centre.
I was contracted as a Dubbing Mixer/Engineer, working with DAR Storm Hard Disc Sound Systems and 24 Track Analogue Multitracks using an SSL 5000 Series Mixing Desk. I installed upgrades to the existing Synchronisers and Hard Disk Equipment, followed by installations of Digital Audio Equipment and Timecode System Controllers. We installed Digital Dubbing Theatres with Sony Mixing Desks; Networked the DAR Soundstations to cater for Digital transfers from the Video Edit Suites, and setup full Digital layback for Video.
I leased premises in Norwich City Centre and installed a full Broadcast Dubbing Facility, incorporating a Music Recording Studio; with Digital Multitracks; A SADiE Hard Disk Digital Sound Editing System, mixed through a large format "Neve" Desk. All Machines were timecode locked and able to Dubb to picture. My Music Recording experience was used to the fullest extent, having tracks Mastered at Abbey Road for CD release, as well as gaining expertise and Business acumen running this project.
While "Head of Post Production Sound" in the Norwich Studios I amalgamated the Film and Video Dubbing Theatres; Introduced new working Practices and Digital Equipment to improve on quality and flexibility. This also improved reliability and a change of programme format to 24 Track assisted "Stereo" transmission. I specified and co-ordinated the installation of over £600,000 of new High Tech. Equipment and associated Dubbing Theatres, allowing Digital Mixing and Film work for "Survival" Programmes.
I moved to Bristol to join HTV assisting in the setting up of a Film and Video Dubbing Theatre in the Bristol Studios. I also spent a period of time in Cardiff working in their Dubbing Theatres, with the occasional multi-language Dubb in Welsh. I was involved in many varied Programmes including "Kidnapped", "Smuggler" and the "Robin of Sherwood" Series Dramas.I also worked with John Schlessinger on his first Video Drama "Separate Tables", starring Alan Bates. I assisted in the design and building of new facilities for the Dubbing Theatres and the installation of new Equipment, including one of the first 3 Machine Timecode Synchronisers and one of the first AMS Audiofiles in Broadcast Television in the UK.
I rejoined the Universities Audio-Visual Department to take up the vacancy of Sound Recordist, with specialisation in Film Dubbing. I used the locked Film Machines to produce Multi-track Music Recordings and Tracklayed complex Programmes for Student Teaching material.
My duties included working in the Transmission Suites, Test Room repair and Maintenance, and specialisation in "Steenbeck" Film machine repair.
I was involved in various duties, from Camera work, VTR Recording, Closed Circuit TV installation, to Maintenance and Repair. Occasional Film Recordist cover. Day release with the University facilitated an O.N.C. course pass in "Electrical & Electronic Engineering" in one year. The following H.N.C. course was curtailed when joining the BBC, where work pattern did not allow enough time for continuation of studies.
June 1970 I left school with 4 Highers- Physics B, Chemistry C, Maths C, French C, and 3 "O" Levels. Educated in Scotland to 6th Form (Scottish Certificate of Education).
