Ancestors of Emily Rose Billson

Seventh Generation

96. Charles Billson [scrapbook] was born 1811 in Loughborough and was christened 14 Nov 1817 in All Saints, Loughborough.. He died Mar 1888 in Nottingham. Charles married Catherine Dexter on 30 Jul 1832 in Saint Margaret, Leicester.. [Parents]

William and Charles were the eldest two sons of William and Hannah. Not much has been found about their brother Samuel and sister Elizabeth who may have died at a young age. We have more details about Caroline and we have sketchy details of Benjamin, (see details under their profile notes).

We know much more about the two older brothers who both followed in their father's trade as butchers. In 1841 their widowed mother was trading as a butcher in Swan Street Loughborough and by 1851 William was trading at the same place as a butcher and Hannah was running a "Eating House" next-door; Charles had a business as a butcher in Baxtergate.

What happened in the next few years must have had quite an impact on their way of life. Hannah who was in her late sixties and had been left to look after her disabled granddaughter and had ceased trading by 1854. Information from the trade directories indicates that William ceased trading between 1854 and 1855 leaving only Charles in Baxtergate trading as a butcher. William's wife Mary had died in 1852 leaving him with one son who was being looked after by his grandparents.

For unexplainable reasons, some time between 1855 and 1861 Charles up and moved to Nottingham with his wife and younger family, the older children chose to remain in Loughborough. They lived in Nottingham on Derby Road but there are no entries in any of the Nottingham trade directories of him operating a business then or in the future. However, there was a butcher by the name of Briddon Thomas, operating a business from number 14 Derby Road;
it is only conjecture, but may be Charles had found employment at this establishment. By this time (1861) William had started trading again in Loughborough; this time in Derby Square.

Ten years later in Nottingham Charles's wife had died and he was living as a boarder with his elder son Charles, wife and three young children.

There are approximately 300 descendants of Charles and William living at the turn of the 20st century in Loughborough, Nottingham, Canada and Australia.

Later Charles still lived with his Son's family as can be seen below in the 1881 Census entry:

109. Hannah Walker was born c1818. Hannah agreed on marriage contract. [Parents]

Hannah Tipping is in the 1841 census, age given as 20, living at Yeoman St. Bonsal with her husband John Tipping age 30yr and one child Maria 2yr. Next door is a Job Bunting 60 (lead miner), Martha 55 Wife with children Elizabeth and Sara.
In the 1851 census, now living in Church Gate Bonsal, she has five more children, Lydia, (She must have been missed on the 1841census) same age as Maria 12 yr, Hannah 4 yr, John 6 yr and Samuel 1yr.
Now on the 16th Nov 1853 John tipping died from "disease of the lungs" but Hannah was already carrying his child for three months as there is a birth of a girl 18th May 1854 recorded only as "Girl". Her death was on the 19th May 1854. Death certificate records her mother as Hannah Tipping, formerly Walker.
"Death due to injury in birth" and is recorded by a "Job Bunting in attendance".

Job is recorded as being married and living with Hannah (by then a Bunting) & Hannah Maria (Isodora's first daughter) in the 1881 census, (Alfreton, Roll 3416, folio 7, page 7). Here he is recorded as born in Bonsal and aged 43yr.

Hannah out lived Job! In the 1891 census she is recorded as a widow living with Hannah Maria, Granddaughter 19 yr and two other grandsons (or perhaps Great grandsons) James D Bunting 1 yr & William D Bunting 1 month.

In 1891Hannah Maria's mother, Isadora, is living not far away, in South Normanton married to Eli Wilson with
children Mary, Ann & Job.
Family lore has it that non of the family knew anything about Hannah Maria until Catherine was taken ill with diphtheria, at around 36 yr in 1916. See entry under her name.

Mary White (Billson) Isadora's granddaughter reports that her grandmother had nothing to do and very little to say about her mother Hannah. She refered to them as those knobs from Knob Hall. Probably as a result of her early pregnancy and her illegitamate child being looked after by her mother and father.
