Aircraft of
the Royal Air Force 1918-57.
First
Edition 1957.
Putman Press.
From the
Preface: “Now that the Royal Air Force has come to be recognized as Great
Britain’s first line of defence and will soon attain its fortieth anniversary
it is only appropriate that some attempt should be made to gather between the
covers of a single volume all the relevant data, both technical and historical,
on the bewildering variety of aircraft which have served in its squadrons and
training units through the years. The present volume seeks to provide what is
virtually an encyclopedia of aircraft which have served with the Royal Air
Force since its formation On 1 April 1918 to the present day, 1957.
The emphasis
throughout the work is on aircraft which have served in numbers with the R.A.F.
(even if only in small numbers) and no prototype or purely experimental aircraft
are included. Exceptions to this general rule are the various record-breaking
aircraft which have made notable contributions to R.A.F. history and several
contemporary types which have been ordered for development trials and for which
a future R.A.F. career is highly probable. In the first category come the Fairey
Long Range Monoplane, the Schneider Trophy racing seaplanes and the Bristol 138A
high-altitude monoplane. Examples of the second category are the English
Electric P-I supersonic fighter and the Hunting Percival Jet Provost.”
