PETERBOROUGH INTERNATIONAL
ORCHID SHOW
18th, 19th & 20th June 2010
including a
British Orchid Council Congress
Peterborough International Orchid Show was held from Friday, 19th - Sunday, 21st June 2009 at the East of England Showground with around 70 exhibitors and features. An innovation this year was the opening of the Show for sales on the Friday, in line with the East of England Show within which the Orchid Show is staged. This proved to be a worthwhile move with large crowds in the orchid marquee. Many thousands visited the show over the three days.
A Photographic Competition was held for the first time and attracted the encouraging response of 83 entries and the winner was Ben Ooi of Ooi Leng Sun Orchids. Of special significance was a competition for regional schools to design a poster which will become the official show poster for 2010 when the BOC Congress will be hosted at Peterborough; the competition received 66 entries combining artistic and IT skills. The winner Sonia Dodhia of Watford Grammar School for Girls received a piece of commemorative glassware and earned £300 for the school.
Judging took place on the Friday evening and the standard of display, particularly by Societies, was remarkably high. See the PIOS09 page for the results. As is now the custom the trophies were presented by the current President of the East of England Agricultural Society – Mr. Bill Jordan M.B.E. head of Jordan Foods. Among other distinguished visitors, H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester once again paid an extensive visit to the Show.
Alongside the show, the annual symposium of the International Phalaenopsis Alliance was held; delegates enjoyed a comprehensive lecture and social programme. The overseas visitors – particularly from the USA – thoroughly enjoyed the “Peterborough Experience”
The commonest comments made at the end of the show were “the best yet” and “it just gets better and better”. And so to 2010 when alongside the show we will be hosting the British Orchid Council Congress. Registration documents are now available so sign up and enjoy!
