Over 70 exhibitors from 11 countries outside the UK  took part ranging from Japan, Malaya and Taiwan in the East to Columbia, Brazil and Ecuador in the West. Most continental European countries were represented. Once again the plant quality was wonderfully high as was the standard of display by the trade exhibitors, individual growers and particularly by the many Societies. Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal display judging was introduced and Clare & Johan Hermans joined Dick Hartley and Brian Woodward in carrying out this difficult task – such was the high standard. After much deliberation, six Gold Medals were awarded  going to Bournemouth O.S., East Midlands O.S., Foxdale Orchids, North of England O.S., Dave Parkinson Orchids and Ryanne Orchidee.

Best Display Amateur – East Midlands O.S.

Best Display Trade – Ryanne Orchidee

Best Species Amateur – Eulophia quartiniana – R. Russell -Bournemouth O.S.

Best Hybrid Amateur –  Phal.Happy Valentine x Coral Harbour – M. Fryer – E.M.O.S.

Best Species Trade –  Trudelia cristata – Akerne Orchids

Best Hybrid Trade –  Paph. Prince Edward of York – In Charm Orchids

In addition, a new trophy – the Ray Bilton Trophy in honour of that great man of orchids – was inaugurated. It was awarded for the Best Phalaenopsis by an amateur grower and went to Maureen Fryer of East Midlands O.S. This will now become an annual award.

Welcome guests at the show were Munekatzu Ejiri,(a director of the Japan Orchid Growers Association) and the President of the  International Phalaenopsis Alliance, John Stubbings and his wife Sandy. The IPA will be holding their Symposium at Peterborough next year – only the second time it will have been held outside the USA.

Another interesting feature was the chance to win the right to name a recently created and flowering Masdevallia hybrid – Masd. Myra x vellifera – by Ellis Eyre. The winners of the naming rights were a couple from the North East and this hybrid is being registered with the name Masd. Grace Emily.

The RHS Orchid Committee met at the show and had the remarkably high number of 31 plants to consider and on the Sunday, a BOC Judging Symposium was hosted. Once again, a higher than average number of Judges and Trainee Judges attended.
