East Anglia Region.

(Bedford, Cambridge, Huntingdon, Lincoln, Norfolk, Northampton, Rutland & Suffolk).

Bedford.

There are 2 references in the 1500's:

No more are evident until the late 1700's. At this point John Blakiston & Ann (nee Tyton) where present at Little Barford. Their children went on to London. I believe the male line had no issue. John's antecedents are with the Norton family of Durham.

in 1881 at Luton was the family of William Milburn Blakiston, Tobaconist. He too can be traced to Durham. To the family at South Shields said to be traceable to the Seaton family.

Cambridge & Huntingdon.

I discuss this area with refererence both to Rev William Blaxton (though I perceive no connection) and Henry Blaxton Dean of Chichester. However, in addition and perhaps connected to the latter's family are a number of random references. As yet to be pieced into the jigsaw.

I also chanced across the following references which probably have no connection at all:

Feet of Fines Huntingdonshire 1194-1603
8 Edw.ii (33)
Between Robertus Beuerick of Abotesle & Isabella his wife ------& Thomas de Blakedone of Parna Stokton' & Alicia his wife of a messuage & 6 acres & a rood of land in Albotesle & Weresle (Little Staughton).
Thomas BLAKEDONE

Lincoln

The earliest records I have in the area probably relate to the Rev William Blaxton's family (see discussion). Blaxton's are present throughout the 1600's. In the 1700's the I.G.I lists one christening. That of Mary Blackston daughter of John & Alice in 1778 at Grantham.

The late 1800's brought in members of four different family groupings:

  1. A christening in 1869 of Ann daughter of Rev Luke Harrison Youle Blakeston. His family is that of Driffield, ERY, with connections to the late Henry Taylor Blakeston solicitor (11)

  2. Edward Christopher Blackstone (1849-1916) settled for awhile in Stamford. There he set up his engineering firm Blackstone & Co Ltd. (12) His descent being from Beverley, ERY.

  3. Rev. Felix Milburn Blakiston was living in Lincolnshire by 1901. In 1903 he married Mary Augusta nee Fox at Horncastle. There they had three sons Noel a short story writer and historian who married Georgina Russell. They had a daughter Caroline Blakiston an actress. Another son was John Milburn George and the third son the Rev. Patrick Blakiston. Their line being traceable to Seaton (2)

  4. Henry Blakeston at Laughton in 1881 a blacksmith's apprentice who gives his birthplace as Gainsborough. His parentage is yet to be ascertained.

Norfolk.

Between 1616 and 1785 the I.G.I lists 4 marriages and 2 christenings in Norfolk.

The 1851 lists the family of Edward Blaxton dyer, and Eliza, at Norwich with Norwich given as his place of birth circa 1812. To-date I am unsure of his origins.

According to his will, in 1855, living at Thorpe Hall next to Norwich was Commander Thomas Blakiston. Kin of Sir Matthew Blakiston, therefore, with roots to Durham. In 1881 his widow and family where still living there. His wife Harriet died in 1886.

Northampton & Rutland.

There are few early references in Northampton. Non that I know of in Rutland.

in 1881 there are two households with Blackstone's in Northampton:

  1. At Weedon Beck, Nellie Blackstone aged 24 from Forest Row, SSX.

  2. At Woothorpe, the Edward C Blackstone who later moved to Stamford, Lincolnshire and set up his Engineering company prior to moving to Peterborough.

Suffolk.

There are few early references in Suffolk.

  1. From 1861 the Rev Horace Mann Blakiston can be found at Benhall where he was the Vicar. He was the son of Sir Matthew Blakiston 3rd Bt.

  2. The Rev. Ralph Milburn Blakiston, of the Seaton family, was Rector of Hadleigh, SFK, at the time of his death in 1909.
