| Who can become a trampoline coach? |
|
The simple answer is almost
anyone! While it helps to have had experience of trampolining
yourself, it is by no means necessary - a significant proportion of coaches
got into it through their children's participation or through general P.E.
teaching at schools. Bear in mind though that unlike some other
sports, trampoline coaching is a very active role. You'll need to be
able to balance on the side of the trampoline, bounce with your pupil and
catch them when they go wrong. Running a session of beginners,
teaching
front drops, back drops and somersaults for 2 hours is quite a strenuous
workout!
You will obviously also need a CRB check and to attend a child protection
awareness course. If you are considering volunteering as a coach, do
try to spend a significant amount of time observing sessions at your chosen
club, so that you are familiar with the basic terminology and techniques.
To be an assistant coach, you must be 15 years old (you can attend the
course when you are 14) and all higher levels have a minimum age of 18 years
(17 to take the course). |
| Where do I start? |
The British Gymnastics coaching
qualifications start at 'Assistant Coach'. This level of qualification
is a great introduction, taking you as far as shaped jumps, swivel-hips,
front & back drops. Once you've done this course, you can teach these
moves provided there is a more qualified coach in attendance. Further
qualifications are listed below.
To find a course, check on the
British
Gymnastics website or, if you're in the East Midlands, check the
EMTTC website. |
| What are the levels of coaching qualifications? |
There are 6 levels of coaching qualification administered by British Gymnastics. These are
Assistant Coach, Trampoline Coach, Club Coach, Senior Club Coach, High Performance Coach and International Coach.
There is also a Teacher's trampoline coach qualification, which is
equivalent to level 2 (trampoline coach), but without the BG-specific Common
Core module.
An Assistant Coach (level 1) is only permitted to coach under the direct
supervision of a more qualified coach. A Trampoline Coach (level 2)
can take responsibility for a session. To run a club, you must be at
least a level 3 (Club) Coach. At all levels, you are not permitted to
coach moves beyond the syllabus of the qualification you hold, with the
exception of coaches in the process of obtaining the next higher
qualification, under the direct supervision of a more qualified coach.
The moves that are covered by each level of qualification are outlined
below (these may not be exhaustive lists). |
