DMT Review 2008

2008 - A Successful Year for DMT Internationals!

Now that the International season almost over, it is time to look back over 2008 and review the DMT clubs at international competitions.  Clubs and teams, all Members of British Gymnastics, were busy supporting overseas competitions and indeed came home with no fewer than 19 DMT podium places from 25 finalists.
DMT competitions were held in Sweden (The Frivolten Cup), North Portugal (The Feira Cup) and South Portugal (The Loule  Cup).

Sweden (The Frivolten Cup DMT)

A remarkable run of podium places including gold medals for Sean Barnes of Billingham, Shannon OŽBrien from Bassetlaw who won the under 12 group and Laura Ashley from Bassetlaw who won the DMT Junior category.  There were a grand total of 15 GB  finalists in the Frivolten Cup.  One remarkable result was the clean sweep of all three medals in the U15-16 BOYS.  1st Sean Barnes, 2nd Alex Reed and 3rd Lewis Blakey all from Billingham.

The Frivolten Cup was shown live on the Internet and it was reported that parents and supporters were fixed to their  computer screens for the 2 day competition because Swescore was live, on-line, along with web cam.  Needless to say,  this web feature was popular because competitors had the option to 'face-up' to the web camera and wave to the  supporters at home.

GB Clubs dominated the U12 Girls by taking the top four places.  Shannon OŽBrien won Gold, with  Mollie Baker (Ringwood & Bournemouth) wining Silver.  3rd place medal went to Katie OŽBrien (Bassetlaw) and 4th  place was awarded to Saxon Stableford (Ringwood & Bournemouth).

Adam Starovla (Billingham) finished in 3rd  place while team mate Jordan Briggs also made the final and finished in 5th place.  The under 12 boys finalist was Mathew Colley from Bassetlaw who finished in a respectable 4th place just behind Russia.

Central Galaxy TC also had a significant showing in the DMT Finals. In the DMT Junior Girls final Charlotte Pinder made the podium, winning the Silver medal.  Also from Central Galaxy, Jack Gordon won Bronze in the DMT Junior Boys just behind competitors from Sweden and Portugal.  Lauren Ponder from Central Galaxy also qualified for and competed in the U14 final, finishing in 7th place.

GB club competitors held their own in the senior groups too, with a fantastic 2nd place in the DMT Ladies Open for Claire Madigan of Ringwood & Bournemouth.  Katie Wood (Dynamics TC) and Sarah Bascome (Ringwood and Bournemouth) also made the Ladies final and finished in 5th and 6th respectively.  In the DMT Men's Open, Dale Bevan competed his first Men's competition and finished in 11th place.

North Portugal (The Feira Cup DMT).

The Feira Cup, held in Northern Portugal, is an outstanding event simply because the competition organisation is  outstanding.  All transport is provided between the hotels and competition venue and the event is held in the small town of Santa Maria da Feira where evening entertainment can be found at a massive Medieval festival in the town  centre.

In the Female Open event, Lucy Hatton from All Stars Trampoline club, finished 2nd and Lauren Wilkins from Charnwood  was 3rd.  Laura Ashley from Phoenix, finished in 6th Place in the Youth group.  Dale Bevan (Bassetlaw), competed in the men's event and qualified for the final in 4th place but finished 8th.  In a field of 24 competitors, Charlotte Hughes  (10th), Amber Berry, Jessica Draycott and Paige Shaw (Charnwood), completed successful passes but did not qualify for the finals. However, all have gained valuable international DMT experiences. The same was true in the Youth Male event for Luke Callachan from Bassetlaw and Callum Conway, Charnwood.

South Portugal (The Loule Cup).

This was an exciting competition for our club DMT competitors because they were able to watch and support our Elite GB team who were in competition with the best DMT teams in the world.

Outstanding results for the Female Open event at the Loule Cup since four of the eight finalists were from the UK.   The winner of the Gold Medal was Sian Reece from Vertigo TC, 2nd was Coral Isaac from High Flyers and 3rd was Charlotte Brown.  Also in the same group in 4th place was Claire Walker from Vertigo TC.
The Open Men's final had 2 competitors that made the final, Dale Bevan from Bassetlaw finished in 5th place with Ben Chick from Vertigo TC finishing in 8th spot - The Men's final was won by Andre Fernades Portugal with a score of  143.50 and four difficulty passes of 8.40, 7.60, 8.40, 8.00.

British Gymnastic Clubs that attended the Loule Cup were Vertigo TC, Bassetlaw, High Flyers. They were invited to join forces and become GB teams in the male and female DMT events.  All three teams finished on the podium.

Ladies Team 2nd place were High Flyers, Beth Smith, Carrie Robinson, Annie Davies and Coral Isaac.
Ladies Team 3rd place were Vertigo/Nova, Claire Walker, Sian Reece, Laura Cowling and Saffron Martineau.
Men's Team 3rd place were Dale Bevan, Ben Chick, Kyle Robinson and Max Schindehutte.
Junior finalists -  female, Carrie Robinson High Flyers finished in 8th place with her team mates Annie Roase Davies  (9th), Rosie Pegge (10th) and Mollie Noble (11th) all missing out on the finals despite completing all their  passes.  Nova Trampoline Club also had a competitor in this group, Laura Cowling (13th) who performed one of the best  group scores in her 1st round pass but was only marked out of one skill in her second pass.  Beth Smith from High  Flyers was calm in her first pass and got a respectable score, but she was also was marked out of one skill in her second pass and therefore finished in 15th place (18 in group).  Everyone that attended this event have left Portugal  with increased knowledge and experience, some with new international friends.  Some even managed to combine a competition with a mini holiday!
