From 1862 to date
The church was built in 1862 as a district church of
Cheshunt, St Mary made possible through the generosity of local benefactors. The building is Neo Gothic of handsome proportions with relatively few embellishments. Improved heating and better lighting were introduced later and an organ was purchased. These projects were made possible largely through the generosity of various local subscribers and benefactors. In 1871 the district became a parish in its own right with its own Parish Priest.
St James served a congregation largely consisting of nursery workers. The parish struggled financially and attendance was often poor. From the 1930s onwards more and more homes were built in Goffs Oak and the population is now well in excess of 10,000. Parishioners have faithfully worshipped at St James and gladly borne the burden of maintaining ministry, church and grounds.
