Sources of Inspiration - Lankhmar

Lankhmar
(Fritz Leiber)
Lankhmar
This series tells of the adventures of Fafhrd (a Northern Barbarian) and the Gray Mouser (a magician thief duelsman). Our heroes are adventurers, master swordsmen who tangle with men, gods, monsters and women.

The Lankhmar stories are currently collected into two volumes, by the Fantasy Masterworks series.
The following table shows how these two volumes relate to other editions you may come across:

Swords against Death, which has our heroes questing to unknown continents and taking on Death.

Lean Times in Lankhmar

Swords in the Mist, in which Fafhrd becomes a priest and the Gray Mouser goes to seed, then they travel across the sea and quest for a Castle called Mist
Swords against Wizardry, in which our heroes climb the great mountain of Stardock, and then fight politics and magicians in the city of Quarmall.

Second Book of Lankhmar

Return to Lankhmar
Swords of Lankhmar, in which Lankhmar is threatened by a plague of intelligent rats
Swords and Ice Magic, in which the gods revenge themselves on our heroes, who then travel North with Odin and Loki.

Farewell to Lankhmar
the Knight and Knave of Swords, the climax of the epic, written much later than the earlier stories, with many of the themes from earlier stories recurring.
