In the land of Gwynedd, certain men have the Deryni gene which allows them to perform magic. Gwynedd is a Christian society, based on Mediaeval Britain with a strong celtic flavour. There are several other kingdoms that vie with Gwynedd for supremacy. Within Gwynedd, through fear, the Deryni are often persecuted and oppressed. Sadly some of these books are out of print, so you may have to scour second hand bookstores for some of them. Camber of Culdi (1976), Saint Camber (1978) and Camber the Heretic (1981) deal with the origin of the Deryni and the exploits of their champion priest Camber. Camber of Culdi Saint Camber Camber the Heretic The Chronicles of the Deryni, comprising Deryni Rising (1970), Deryni Checkmate (1972) and High Deryni(1973), are set many years after Camber, and deal with Kelson, the last heir to the throne of Gwynedd, who must use his Deryni powers to survive. There is plenty of intrigue and battle in these stories. Deryni Rising Deryni Checkmate High Deryni Bishop's Heir (1984), The King's Justice (1985), The Quest for Saint Camber (1986) and now King Kelson's Bride (2000) follow on and cover the further exploits of King Kelson as he grows into a man and faces new enemies from abroad and within. Bishop's Heir The King's Justice The Quest for Saint Camber King Kelson's Bride Some of the most recent novels (the Heirs of Saint Camber series) are set in between the times of Camber and Kelson: The Harrowing of Gwynedd (1989), King Javan's Year (1992) and The Bastard Prince (1994, the conclusion to the series). Two volumes have been released so far, In the King's Service (2004) and Childe Morgan (2005). In the King's Service Childe Morgan Katherine Kurtz has also recently co-written a book entitled Codex Deryianus, which is an A-Z guide to the Deryni world. Deryni Archives (1986) is a collection of short stories set at different points in time. Deryni Tales (2002) is a collection of stories by fans of the series.
