Simon R. Green writes heroic fantasy with a
comic element. His first fantasy novel,
Blue
Moon Rising starts off with the hero (Rupert) and his unicorn
fighting a dragon to rescue a princess (Julia), but it doesn't work out
quite as you expect. Politics, magicians, artefacts and lots of darkness
and demons follow. A sequel Down among the Dead Men doesn't
feature Rupert and Julia, but draws on the same Forest Kingdom setting. The City of Haven is a bit like Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar - a rough place inhabited by bravos, magicians and gods. In Haven, peace is kept by two guards, Hawk and Fisher, who just might be Rupert and Julia from Blue Moon Rising. The six Hawk and Fisher stories published so far have been brought together in two volumes. In the first volume, Haven of Lost Souls (UK) or Swords of Haven : The Adventures of Hawk & Fisher (US), Hawk and Fisher fight a werewolf (Hawk and Fisher), police an election (Winner Takes All) and investigate who is killing the gods (The God Killer). In the second volume, Fear and Loathing in Haven (UK) or Guards of Haven : The Adventures of Hawk & Fisher (US), Hawk and Fisher hunt for a spy (Wolf in the Fold), are set up (Guard against Dishonour) and deal with a hostage situation (The Bones of Haven). His last book in this series (currently out of print, but well worth tracking down) is Beyond the Blue Moon, where Hawk/Rupert and Fisher/Julia return to the Forest Kingdom. Also worth reading by the same author is Blood and Honour, which is set in the same world, and shares the intrigue, magic and humour of the other novels.
