Thomas Covenant (Stephen Donaldson)
Thomas Covenant
The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever deal with a reluctant hero, Thomas Covenant, a leper who is sucked into a fantasy world, the Land, where only he can halt the relentless rise of Lord Foul and his minions. What makes the books interesting is the vision, the refusal of the main character to act out his role, and the sense of loss as one after another of the good guys fall.

The original trilogy (Lord Foul's Bane, The Illearth War, The Power That Preserves) has been collected into a single volume, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever.

The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant are set some four hundred years after the first trilogy, with the Land once again threatened. This time Thomas Covenant believes in himself, but finds that the rules of the world have changed, and he must adapt if he is to save the Land. Again published originally as a trilogy (The Wounded Land, The One Tree, White Gold Wielder), the books have been collected into a single volume, The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

Recently, Stephen Donaldson has started a new series, the Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, in which a major character from the Second Chronicles, Linden Avery, returns to the Land. Two volumes have been released so far, The Runes of the Earth and Fatal Revenant. Two further volumes are planned, Against All Things Ending and The Last Dark, due for release in 2010 and 2013 respectively.
