Since October 2002, I have been taking part in a project dedicated to assisting people who are new to the Mac OS X platform having switched from Windows or Linux systems. The http://www.macmentor.org/ site, apart from the usual support forum, aims to match switchers with experienced “mentors” to give one-to-one guidance during the transition.
Between 1998 and 2002, I developed and supported a network for a student household. Key skills acquired included:
Fulfilling the requirements for secure, remote administration of a head-less Linux server (serial-port console access, SSH logins and tunnelling, web-based administration software – e.g. Webmin)
Providing networked file, print and connectivity resources to a network of disparate platforms.
Securing an internal network from access over the internet – configuring a gateway machine’s firewall correctly, without impacting firewalled users’ functionality.
I have also gained valuable support experience over many years, having been regarded as the first port of call for friends and family with both hardware and software-related queries. I hope that I’m able to recommend appropriately, and configure systems and applications to be as usable and intuitive to the user as possible.
