Adopt A Composer (2004 - 2005)
Run by the Performing Rights Society , Making Music and spnm, Chris Long will be
working with the City of Birmingham Choir as composer in residence until the end
of 2005. The result of this scheme will be a 10 -15 minute work for choir and orchestra
to be perfomed at Symphony Hall by the City of Birmingham Choir and the CBSO.
The main feature of the concert will be Verdi's Requiem. The new piece will be first
on the program. It is the aim of the association to produce a work that contains an
input from the choir so that a real sense of collaboration and ownership
surrounds the new piece.
updates on the progress of the piece can be viewed at the City of Birmingham Choir website
Mersey New Sounds (2000)
Run by spnm, this festival ran for 1 week at the Tate Gallery Liverpool. During this time
there were performances newly composed works that took inspiration from the
surrounding exhibitions.
Chris' response to the Peter Blake retrospective exhibition, 'About Collage', was a solo
trombone piece titled 'Boxes'. The stimulus was a series of collages enclosed within
boxes. The music was composed within short concise timeframes and had a delicately
structured soundworld, reflecting the worlds contined in the collages. The piece was
performed several times during a day at various locations within the exhibition.
