Chris Long was born in 1973 in Widnes, Cheshire. He gained a first class degree in fine art and music at the University of Liverpool, studying composition with Stephen Pratt. A grant from the Ralph Vaughen Williams Trust Fund enabled him to study composition at postgraduate level at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. There he studied composition with Roger Redgate and Agustin Fernandez.

His music has been performed by amateur and professional ensembles including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of Opera North, the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Lontano and Philip Shepherd as well as being broadcast on BBC Radio 3. His music featured in the spnm Mersey New Sounds Festival in 2000 and the Norfolk and Norwich Festival in 1998 and has been shortlisted several times by spnm. During 2004-2005 he was
Composer in Association with the City of Birmingham Choir as part of
the PRS / Making Music / spnm Adopt a Composer Scheme.

He is currently Head of Music at Saint Augustine's Catholic High School in Redditch
