The ‘Yellow Book’ promises “a surprise new landscaped area planned for 2009, subject to weather permitting”. Well, the weather was not that agreeable over the winter months as I battled the elements, shifting barrow-loads of subsoil and replacing it with fresh soil and compost to prepare for the hard landscaping that was to follow in the Spring. I am at the same time both pleased and relieved to say it has been finished and is ready for the open day. In spite of the tight schedule, I must say the planting is already looking quite mature as I have played my usual game of ‘musical planting’ by appropriating plants and shrubs from other areas of the garden. I don’t want to give too much away otherwise it will not be a surprise! I had a ‘problem area’ that I have wanted to tackle for years: a raised lawn that has been difficult to mow but, because of the distant views over the Trent Valley to Lichfield and beyond, it has been crying out for a nice seating area in which to relax with a Pimms or perhaps a G&T or even possibly a cup of tea! For this reason I have decided to call this spot “The Haven” as I see it as a place to retreat on a hot summers day (I believe we have been promised some) or spend a moment at the end of the day. I resolved that 2009 would be the year to fulfil my ambition so have been gleaning ideas and planning this area for many months. I hope it gives you as much pleasure on your brief visit as I hope to enjoy over the coming years. Regards Sylvia
