Lilac Cottage, which dates back to 1820, is set in a 1-acre country garden close to the top of Gentleshaw Common, near Lichfield in Staffordshire, approaching 800 ft above sea level. This delightful location in a designated area of natural beauty offers sweeping vistas across the Trent Valley to the City of Lichfield and the counties beyond. Developed by plantswoman Sylvia Nunn over the last 35 years this is, above all, a plant-enthusiast’s garden with an emphasis on colour-themed borders, plant associations, form and foliage.

The 'hot' border

The ‘hot’ border in August

Visitors will encounter a magnificent profusion of perennials, combined with interesting trees and shrubs in mixed and herbaceous borders. Areas worthy of particular mention include a sumptuous hot border, a small wildlife pool and bog garden and shady walks with woodland planting. The ‘Dell’, a gravel garden landscaped and planted in early 2004, is now a nicely-matured feature.

‘Lilac Cottage’ featured in a recent BBC2 Gardeners’ World special programme, “Colour in the Garden” presented by Carol Klein, in which Sylvia talked about her planting themes and passion for colour co-ordination. Numerous articles have appeared in the local press and publications over the years and ‘Lilac Cottage’ has also been mentioned in ‘Gardening Which?’. “A garden to visit” as recommended in 'Amateur Gardening'.

A selection of hardy perennials will be available for sale with 10% of the proceeds being donated to the National Gardens Scheme charity.
