"Sixty Years On" - Benstead Challenge Cup

Addendum . Index to years
The Cup was presented to the West Surrey D.A. in 1937 by Mr. Archibald Benstead, then D.A. Vice-President and Woking Urban District Councillor.

It was decided by the Committee of that year that a series of events designed to give everyone, hardrider or potterer, an equal chance, would provide the fairest means of determining the best all-round cyclist in the D.A.  Eight events were organised that year and the late Tom Keeble was the popular winner of a close and exciting tussle.  The Cup has been awarded each year since 1937 except for the period 1941-1946 when so many members were serving in the war.  Past winners are:-

The Cup is awarded annually to the West Surrey D.A. member who has accumulated the highest number of points from specified events during the year.  Points are awarded on a percentage basis in all competitive events e.g. if 100 points are available for a particular event and there are 20 competitors, the winner will receive 100 points, 2nd - 95 points, 3rd - 90 points, and so on.
