"Sixty Years On" - 1970

The year started miserably.  It was cold and wet;  sleet and fog followed and there was snow in March.  Seventeen Thursday Nighters had another buffet supper at Bisley and Bob West's slide show of a tour in Austria brought 40 to Horsell.  Because of "double Summer time" riders were getting home in daylight from mid-February.  There were eleven on a tour of Dorset at Easter but only seven were on the April "50" in trying, unseasonable weather and, in mid-month, there was snow, hail and rain to disrupt the runs.  Dunsfold was the scene of a hot lunch for 22 on a joint ride with the K.W.'s and seven Thursday Nighters had a week-end based on The Swan at East Ilsley.  Only seven started on the "100" and an invitation ride produced a mere two newcomers.

In the first week of August the D.A. organised and led daily rides, from Wednesday to Saturday, to commemorate the Club's 90th anniversary when riders from Lancashire, Somerset, Oxford and Southampton were augmented by six from Holland.  Bank Holiday week-end (now at the end of August instead of the beginning) was spent hostelling at Guestling and Alfriston.  Oakhanger and Wheatley hills were used for the hill-climb and free-wheeling and these locations have been used ever since.

Ten supported a week-end at Greens Norton hostel and, in November, Stephen Dallaway of C.T.C. headquarters staff was guest speaker at the Guildford dinner during which a wallet was presented to Les Gray to mark his many years service as Auditor and, at the later A.G.M. Gareth Keller took over the Secretaryship from Alan Robinson.  A new venue for the Christmas tea that year was found at Wonersh and there was snow for Christmas itself.
