Lamentations

This was the beginning of several sad losses in the ranks.  Popular member, Norman Pearce, died in August while, at the end of January 1961, "Cab" Stanley was struck down and his death was followed by that of Gladys Inder within a month and, later in the year, Doug Loughnane died.  There was further tragedy when Ken Smales took his own life.  From that time onwards, Bill Inder who had not been riding so regularly for some years, renewed his enthusiasm and also started to furnish the local press with weekly reports on D.A. affairs - a feature that has continued for 20 years.

George Alesbury became D.A. Treasurer, a position he has retained to this day, and Miss Pat Cusack took on the Woking Secretaryship.  A great deal of help was being given to child cycle training and there were tests at Walton, Tolworth, Chertsey and Woking while Pat Cusack organised a Club stand at the "Teen & Twenty Fair" at Guildford's Co-op.

To mark his 60th birthday, Reg Pollard undertook the longest ride of his life - the 166 miles from Woking to Bexhill and back.

At the Woking Section dinner in December, Cyril Cripps was presented with a silver tankard in tribute to his 30 years as D.A. Auditor, a position that then went to D. Reynolds of Kingston.

David Bolingbroke made a first appearance on Woking's Christmas morning ride to Jacobs Well scout hut, a venue that stayed as a regular feature until 1975.  That Section had a large stock of bar badges and as a sales drive had little success, those remaining were eventually given as prizes.
