"Sixty Years On" - 1948

1948 saw the first of a series of Loiterers Runs organised by Woking Section when 34 attended and Kingston Section's Family runs were also a great success.  Kingston also organised the "50" via Shere and Petworth with a finish at Witley when 18 out of 20 starters were successful and, from that time they continued to be responsible for that event, with Woking running the "100", until the partnership ended in 1963.  Assistance was given to Guildford Borough Council with a children's road safety test and, in the Benstead Cup Competition, the hill-climb and treasure hunt were won by Don Field and the free-wheeling by Jack Manning.  The hill used for the latter event was Red Road, from Chobham Ridges towards Lightwater.  Jack was probably the heaviest rider and, helped by a powerful westerly wind he just topped the rise that stopped all the others and sailed on for another mile towards Gordon Boys' Home!

The "100" (Staines/Wantage and back) had 22 entries with 14 successful.  Cards for tea bookings came into general use and the possibility of a D.A. badge was considered.  Attendances on Kingston's Family runs varied between 12 and 30 and they held a sports day in August that went off well;  they had also published the eighth number of a section magazine.  Woking had 30 on an invitation ride in September and their map library was being put to greater use.  The suggestion was made that the C.T.C. council be invited to hold one of its meetings in Guildford in connection with the D.A.'s 21st Anniversary in 1949.  Altogether 1948 was a very satisfactory year after the war-time doldrums.
