"Sixty Years On" - 1946

1946 saw Stan Baron re-elected as D.A. President, with Archie Benstead as Vice-President.  Don Field was in evidence once again;  and Freddy Smeeth organised a joint run with the Weybridge Wheelers to Balls Cross and Woking Section acquired a new member in George Porter whose previous cycling had been done with the Bracknell Wheelers and he proved to be one of a small band who served on the committee and has remained a loyal supporter ever since in spite of being based at Sunninghill.

The A.G.M. was held at the Ming Tea Rooms, Ripley, while a new tea place, The Oxford Blue at Old Windsor was the venue for several committee meetings.  D.A. meetings were also held at such unlikely places as Harefield and Waltham St. Lawrence.

In April, the Woking Section's News Letter and the Comforts Fund were wound up;  June saw the D.A. "50" with 13 entries and the "100" with 17, founder-member Gar. Gribble acting as checker at Bagshot and Stan Baron starting the latter event from Cobham.  In October, a special run in the Windsor area for ex-service members attracted 12.

This was a period when many ex-service members had returned to civvy street but, having been several years away from their previous ways of life evidently had had their effects.  Some did return to regular riding but quite a few, being more wordly-wise and mature, had visions of settling down and marrying.  One such was George Alesbury who, apart from occasional appearances, did not resume cycling seriously until the early 50's.
