George Spiller joined the group. He was about 35, married, with several
children and had been in the army in India. To the rest of the local
teenage membership, George was an old man but he got on to the committee
and, working in a London Solicitor's office, he was a great help in drafting
letters and reports. Though he usually turned back before lunch-time,
he was a regular supporter and provided much cockney humour. Runs
started between 9 and 10 am but went on until 9 or 10 pm, even in winter.
Most teas were in pubs and afterwards members frequently played darts or
cards until the bars opened at 7 pm; there was no "telly" to rush
home for!
In the next few years a number of new faces appeared, notably Cyril
Cripps, Vic Jenner, "Cab" Stanley, Vic Barnard, T. Keeble and Bernard Reeves,
all of whom were to stay loyal for many years and all serving in some capacity,
from Vice-President to Runs Secretary.
